High Bridge Project

By building and connecting a diverse coalition of public agencies, citywide organizations, and local residents, the High Bridge Coalition has been leveraging resources to reopen the High Bridge—New York City’s oldest standing bridge—and improving the parks on either side.

Some of our achievements include:

  • Access Path and stairway in Highbridge Park, completed in May 2008.
This $4.2 million project created a new accessible path for pedestrians, bicyclists, and service vehicles, and a safe connection between the park and the surrounding neighborhood. In addition, the iron stairway that connects the High Bridge to the park’s historic water tower has been restored for public use.
  • As part of Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC, $60 million has been allocated toward the reconstruction of the High Bridge.
  • Built community leadership and support for the High Bridge and Highbridge Parks.
  • Increased programming and activity in Highbridge Parks.
  • Helped partners leverage resources to restore the parks to re-open the High Bridge.
