Innovative Projects & Initiatives

We have developed a number of initiatives that help park users and decision makers to connect, work together, and exchange information that will eventually lead to a shared vision of parks as vital centers of community life.

Current projects include:

People Make Parks is a project of Hester Street Collaborative and Partnerships for Parks to help New Yorkers participate in the design of their parks.  When the community contributes to a park’s design, better parks are built and community commitment to long-term park stewardship grows.  Find out more at: PeopleMakeParks.org.

Greening Western Queens is a new project bringing hundreds of new trees to Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside over the next three years! There are many exciting opportunities for you to be involved throughout the project, including: mapping where new trees can be planted, working together to help create a tree planting plan, and caring for trees with training, support, and supplies. Find out more!

Catalyst for Neighborhood Parks is a multi-year initiative, working in historically under-served neighborhoods, that galvanizes support for and commitments to:

  • physical renovations of the parks;
  • sports, arts, and education programming;
  • local parks stewardship;
  • and collaborative work amongst the partners, including those between the communities and municipal agencies.

Immigrants & Parks Collaborative: Recognizing that parks are the democratic spaces of a city and are essential to a vibrant and inclusive community life, The Immigrants & Parks Collaborative works to develop specific strategies to engage new immigrants to create healthier, safer, more inclusive public space for all New Yorkers to enjoy. In conjunction with the New York Immigration Coalition, and through the generosity of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, we support the efforts of a number of community-based organizations in carrying out the daily activities that connect immigrants with their local parks.
